Not All Automotive Glass is Equal
Did you know that windshields are made from laminated safety glass. With thin plastic between two layers of glass, a windshield is heated into one piece during manufacturing. Laminated safety glass cracks when hit but doesn’t shatter.
The other windows on your car are made of tempered glass. Tempered glass builds strength through repeated heating and cooling. If this glass ever breaks, it will shatter in small pieces but without jagged, sharp edges.
Laminated Glass Shields but Also Traps
The shatter-proof safety of laminated glass makes it seem like the better choice for all car windows.
However, laminated glass is design to stick together, even when broken. Tempered glass, on the other hand, will break into smaller pieces and allow occupants to crawl out. This is important, in case the mechanical operations of car doors are disabled during an accident, or if a car is submerged.
What About Windshield Repair?
It seems magical that windshield nicks and cracks can be quickly eliminated. Have you wondered how this glass repair technique works?
The simple answer is: resin. Using a specialized applicator, windshield techs apply a precise quantity of resin to a windshield chip or crack. By employing a tight vacuum seal during the process and adequate drying time, the windshield is as good as new.
